The first step in bringing alignment to your leadership is to be able to clearly, quickly, and decisively answer your Why question.

  • Why are you leading?
  • Why are you doing what you’re doing?
  • Why are you putting your time and energy into one particular strategy, versus another?

When you can answer such questions with crystal clarity, your leadership priorities, strategies and energies will begin to fall into alignment. The results can be powerful.

(The seminal work on the topic has been contributed by Simon Sinek in his groundbreaking book, Start with Why)

Here’s how this principle has played out in my own leadership.

As I have launched another year of leadership, I have taken the time recently to revisit the Why regarding my various leadership platforms. It has been time once again to re-center my social media platforms around my fundamental Why question.

In short, why do I contribute my thoughts on leadership through various social media platforms?

  • I want to encourage and equip you to lead with kindness, respect and humility,

  • I want to demonstrate the need for personal responsibility and accountability in your leadership,

  • I want to “beat the drum” for unity, when our world seems torn apart by division,

  • I want to provide constant, ongoing reminders of the need for strong character in leadership,

  • I want to respectfully, but clearly, extol the value of faith in leadership.

Even as these Why’s drive my content, I commit to treating you with respect. I consider it a privilege that you would take even a few moments to glance at my content, and I will therefore take on a tone in my writing that, I trust, is kind and respectful. I will avoid needless controversies and will stay away from online squabbles.

Well, that’s my Why. And I trust that as 2021 unfolds, you will find that my content remains true to these Why statements.

Have you clarified your leadership Why for 2021? If you haven’t, take some time to bring this into focus.

You’ll soon discover the leadership power that comes when your priorities, strategies and energies and aligned under a single Why.
