{"id":1194,"date":"2011-07-29T06:00:06","date_gmt":"2011-07-29T06:00:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.scottcochrane.com\/?p=1194"},"modified":"2011-11-24T19:40:54","modified_gmt":"2011-11-24T19:40:54","slug":"the_question_that_can_make_or_break_a_company_or_a_church","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/scottcochrane.com\/index.php\/2011\/07\/29\/the_question_that_can_make_or_break_a_company_or_a_church\/","title":{"rendered":"The Question that can Make or Break a Company &#8230;or a Church"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We recently installed a technology in our house that has provided me with two things; great entertainment, and a great leadership question.<\/p>\n<p>Last week we dragged ourselves kicking and screaming into the 21<sup>st<\/sup> century by having our first Personal Video Recorder (PVR) installed, and that evening we downloaded our first \u2018on demand\u2019 movie.<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t think I\u2019ll ever step foot in a video store again.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-1208\" title=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.scottcochrane.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/entertainment2-271x300.png\" alt=\"entertainment\" width=\"271\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scottcochrane.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/entertainment2-271x300.png 271w, https:\/\/scottcochrane.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/entertainment2.png 417w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 271px) 100vw, 271px\" \/>I quickly realized I\u2019d never again have to worry about a movie not being \u2018in stock\u2019, I\u2019d never have to worry about a late fee, I\u2019d never have to leave my house on a rainy night to pick up or drop off a DVD.<\/p>\n<p>And I realized too why video stores are closing by the thousands, and why on-demand movie services are flourishing; it\u2019s all about understanding the difference between a <em>value<\/em> and a <em>strategy<\/em>. The <em>value<\/em> is convenient home entertainment. The <em>strategy<\/em> is the means by which that home entertainment is delivered.<\/p>\n<p>Most video stores got this one wrong for too long. Instead of focusing on the value of convenient home entertainment, they simply looked for better ways to deliver their strategy (renting movies on DVD). Meanwhile on-demand movie services have won the day by zeroing in on the <em>value<\/em> of convenient home entertainment<\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s the leadership question; if you\u2019re trying to kick-start a stalled ministry <strong>are you focusing on a <em>value<\/em> or on a <em>strategy<\/em>?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In the leadership offices of major video store chains, there should have been a large banner hanging which read, \u201cIt\u2019s about convenient home entertainment, not about renting DVD\u2019s\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Similarly in the local church there should be banners hanging in the meeting rooms of leadership teams which read,<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>It\u2019s about biblical community, not about small groups.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>It\u2019s about worshipping Almighty God, not about music;.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>It\u2019s about life-transformation, not about sermons.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>It\u2019s about stewardship, not about tithing.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>It\u2019s about living out the gospel, not about being missional.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There are dozens more that could be added, but you get the idea.<\/p>\n<p>Bottom line; focus your leadership energies on <em>values<\/em> before <em>strategies<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>There are thousands of video stores who wish they had.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What would you add to this \u2018values versus strategies\u2019 list?<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>We recently installed a technology in our house that has provided me with two things; great entertainment, and a great leadership question.
