Someone must own the outcome. Someone must pace around their office thinking through every ramification and potential hurdle.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-2012\" style=\"border-image: initial; border-width: 5px; border-color: white; border-style: solid;\" title=\"TeamDecisions\" src=\"http:\/\/www.scottcochrane.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/TeamMeeting-hires-300x198.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"198\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scottcochrane.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/TeamMeeting-hires-300x198.jpg 300w, https:\/\/scottcochrane.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/TeamMeeting-hires-433x286.jpg 433w, https:\/\/scottcochrane.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/TeamMeeting-hires.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>In his Harvard Business Review <a title=\"http:\/\/blogs.hbr.org\/cs\/2012\/04\/the_illusion_of_decision_makin.html\" href=\"http:\/\/blogs.hbr.org\/cs\/2012\/04\/the_illusion_of_decision_makin.html\" target=\"_blank\">blog post<\/a>, <em>If You Think Your Team Makes Decisions, Think Again<\/em>, Bob Frisch wrote, \u201cExecutive teams may discuss issues, debate courses of action, and even give their stamps of approval, but they actually don&#8217;t decide anything of moment as a group\u2026 It is the leader, not the group, who ultimately allows that particular decision to go through.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For this understanding to gain traction there are 3 important steps you must take;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>1.\u00a0\u00a0 Clarify roles and responsibilities at the outset.<\/strong><br \/>\nInstead of saying, \u201cTeam, we have a decision to make today,\u201d it should be, \u201cTeam, I have a decision to make today, (or \u201cSusan has a decision to make today\u201d) and your help is required.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>2.\u00a0\u00a0 Set the decision-maker up for success.<\/strong><br \/>\nIf you have given Susan the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">responsibility<\/span> for a decision, you must also confer on her the <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">authority<\/span> to make that decision. Let the team know that it\u2019s her call. And it\u2019s her responsibility to ensure its success.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>3.\u00a0\u00a0 Coach the team in how to support the decision.<\/strong><br \/>\nIndividual members of the team may, or may not, agree with the decision reached by you or Susan. Your job becomes coaching the team on how to support that decision even when they disagree.<\/p>\n<p>One of the key members of our team will regularly consult with me when I\u2019ve made a tough decision. If he doesn\u2019t agree with me he will always say, \u201cScott, I see this differently. But I will support you 100%.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>That\u2019s<\/em> where you need to get your team.<\/p>\n<p><em>Always<\/em> make sure that every decision has a name written next to it.<br \/>\n<em>Always<\/em> make sure it is clear who has the responsibility and authority to make a call.<br \/>\n<em>Always<\/em> strive to coach your team toward honest feedback and support of decisions made.<\/p>\n<p>The result will be tremendous traction for the entire organization.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How do you leverage your team in the decision making process?<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How do you help your team make better decisions?
