{"id":2203,"date":"2012-09-04T03:00:29","date_gmt":"2012-09-04T10:00:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.scottcochrane.com\/?p=2203"},"modified":"2012-08-31T11:25:30","modified_gmt":"2012-08-31T18:25:30","slug":"3-indicators-you-could-be-developing-the-wrong-person","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/scottcochrane.com\/index.php\/2012\/09\/04\/3-indicators-you-could-be-developing-the-wrong-person\/","title":{"rendered":"3 Indicators You Could Be Developing the Wrong Person"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><em>Originally posted May 29, 2012<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Bill Hybels has accurately described the local church as the most leadership-intensive organization on planet earth.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, for prevailing churches, leadership development is not a function of filling empty slots in an organization; rather it\u2019s an ongoing process of identifying, equipping and releasing leaders to live out their call.<\/p>\n<p>But how do you know where to invest your leadership development time and energy?<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2201\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2201\" style=\"width: 561px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a title=\"Leadership Ahead Stock photo File #: 4328001\" href=\"http:\/\/www.istockphoto.com\/stock-photo-4328001-leadership-ahead.php\" rel=\"http:\/\/www.istockphoto.com\/stock-photo-4328001-leadership-ahead.php\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"btn-image--openpopup figure size-full wp-image-2201  \" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2201  \" style=\"border: 5px solid silver;\" title=\"iStockPhoto #4328001\" src=\"http:\/\/www.scottcochrane.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/LeadershipAhead.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"561\" height=\"369\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scottcochrane.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/LeadershipAhead.jpg 854w, https:\/\/scottcochrane.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/LeadershipAhead-300x197.jpg 300w, https:\/\/scottcochrane.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/LeadershipAhead-768x505.jpg 768w, https:\/\/scottcochrane.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/LeadershipAhead-433x285.jpg 433w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 561px) 100vw, 561px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2201\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image via iStockPhoto.com<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>That\u2019s more an art than a science, but at the very least I\u2019ve learned three indicators that I could be developing the <em>wrong<\/em> person.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>\u2022 Indicator #1: The person is an agenda-driver<\/strong><br \/>\nI\u2019ve had conversations with people whom I thought had the potential to be a church elder, only to find out that they viewed the position merely as an opportunity to advance a personal agenda.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">If you\u2019re developing a leader, be very wary when you hear things like, \u201cIf I were on the board there\u2019s a couple of issues I\u2019d want to push really hard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Nothing wrong with strong opinions, but when they\u2019re focused on side-issues you have a problem.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>\u2022 Indicator #2: The person is enamoured by \u201cprestige\u201d<\/strong><br \/>\nI was having coffee with a rising leader in the church about future roles. But he kept veering the conversation back to questions of his own profile.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Be cautious when a leader\u2019s primary concern seems to be how much platform time they will have or how it is that they will be identified or profiled in the church.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>\u2022 Indicator #3: The person tries to wedge church leadership into a crowded daytimer<\/strong><br \/>\nIf you\u2019re developing a leader for broader church responsibilities, be careful if they begin to ask things like, \u201cHow much time do I need to devote to this?\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">That can be a very legitimate, reasonable question. But it can also point to someone who is living life at Mach 10, and who is looking to figure out the bare minimum investment of time and energy.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Look instead for someone so captivated by the call of God on their lives and the vision of the church that they will move \u201cheaven and earth\u201d to be a part of it.<\/p>\n<p>Keep your eyes and ears open for where God is at work in the lives of rising leaders.<\/p>\n<p>And keep your discernment on \u201cfull alert\u201d for these warning indicators.<\/p>\n<p>They could save you, and your church, a lot of grief.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Originally posted May 29, 2012 Bill Hybels has accurately described the local church as the most leadership-intensive organization on planet earth.
