But \u201cpowering up\u201d, as it is sometimes called, must be used very carefully, very purposefully and very sparingly. Otherwise it can be rendered ineffective and actually dull your followers\u2019 ears to your leadership.<\/p>\n<p>There are at least four occasions when you need to resist the urge to rant, and just chill out.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>1.\u00a0\u00a0 When you\u2019re tired<\/strong><br \/>\nWhen you get tired your mind is not as sharp and your judgment is impaired. One result can be that you find yourself becoming easily angered over stuff that just shouldn\u2019t bother you.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Never use fatigue as an excuse to power up over your people.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>2.\u00a0\u00a0 When you\u2019re frustrated<\/strong><br \/>\nNone of us are immune to the pressures of day\u2013to-day living. We all get stuck in traffic jams, we all deal with family pressures, and we all receive bad news throughout the day. But as a leader you need to set that aside.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Your people don\u2019t deserve to feel the brunt of your frustration.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>3.\u00a0\u00a0 When you\u2019re trying to copy someone else\u2019s leadership style<\/strong><br \/>\nMaybe you\u2019ve seen another leader use a \u201cgive \u2018em hell\u201d style to achieve results, and you think you ought to give that approach a shot.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">If you\u2019re simply copying another leader\u2019s style you\u2019ll come across as disingenuous.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>4.\u00a0\u00a0 When nothing else is working<\/strong><br \/>\nYou\u2019ve tried to vision-cast your people, and they\u2019re not moving.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">You\u2019ve tried inspiring them to follow the direction you\u2019ve set, and they\u2019re not coming along.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">At this point there can be a temptation to resort to start powering up. Resist that urge.<\/p>\n<p>So before you power up take a moment to evaluate your motive. If it turns out your reasons for powering up are off-base, there may be a better option.<\/p>\n<p>You may just need to chill out.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How do you know when it\u2019s time to power up, or when it\u2019s time to chill out?<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Should you ever rant and rave to make a point?
