Rather, it&#8217;s a tension they learn to manage&#8211;a skill which informs their decisions as to when to move, and when to wait.<\/p>\n<p>Usually there are <strong>four situations when even driven, action-oriented leaders choose to hit the pause button:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>1.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>When you don&#8217;t have all the facts<\/strong><br \/>\nOne of <a href=\"http:\/\/twitter.com\/BillHybels\" target=\"_blank\">Bill Hybels<\/a>&#8216;\u00a0leadership <a href=\"https:\/\/members.growingleadership.com\/resources\/?&amp;isbn=9780310282594#\" target=\"_blank\">axioms<\/a> is <em>facts are your friends<\/em>. Effective leaders make sure all the information is on their desk before pulling the trigger on an important decision.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>2.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>When your emotions are running high<\/strong><br \/>\nAsk a seasoned leader about the worst decisions they&#8217;ve ever made, and you&#8217;ll often find these decisions were made in haste, fueled by extreme feelings of anger, frustration, impatience, etc.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Don&#8217;t make an important decision until you&#8217;ve cooled down.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>3.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>When stakeholders are pressuring you for a quick decision<\/strong><br \/>\nIn his outstanding book, <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.ca\/Contrarians-Guide-Leadership-Steven-Sample\/dp\/0787955876\/ref=sr_1_2?s=books&amp;ie=UTF8&amp;qid=1345495246&amp;sr=1-2\" target=\"_blank\">The Contrarian&#8217;s Guide to Leadership<\/a><\/em>, Steven Sample provides this leadership gem; &#8220;Never make a decision today that can reasonably be put off until tomorrow.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Sample notes that leaders should never feel pressured to make a quick decision, simply because someone else wants them to.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\"><strong>4.\u00a0\u00a0 <\/strong><strong>When God is telling you to wait<\/strong><br \/>\nIn an <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottcochrane.com\/?p=624\">earlier post<\/a> I pointed out that sometimes God will prompt the leader to wait on His timing.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Leaders must have a heart tuned to God&#8217;s still small voice, especially when that voice is telling you to wait.<\/p>\n<p>Hitting the leadership pause button is not the same as being lazy, indecisive or weak.
