For the leader of a church these are the kinds of dynamics that usually drive us to our knees in prayer.<\/p>\n<p>But sometimes, at the very time we need prayer more than anything else, praying can be most difficult.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottcochrane.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/praying-hands.jpg\" class=\"btn-image--openpopup figure aligncenter size-full wp-image-3163\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3163\" title=\"praying-hands\" src=\"http:\/\/www.scottcochrane.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/praying-hands.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"430\" height=\"323\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scottcochrane.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/praying-hands.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/scottcochrane.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/praying-hands-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/scottcochrane.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/praying-hands-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/scottcochrane.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/07\/praying-hands-433x325.jpg 433w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 430px) 100vw, 430px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Words often seem inadequate; too superficial to convey what we\u2019re feeling.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s at these times that leaders throughout the centuries have turned to the ancient practice of praying the scriptures; taking certain texts, contextualizing them, personalizing them, and then praying them back to God.<\/p>\n<p>You likely already incorporate this into your spiritual disciplines. Perhaps you even teach the practice to your congregation.<\/p>\n<p>Certainly in my experience, praying the scriptures has been a lifeline when my own words to God were hard to muster.<\/p>\n<p>From time to time on this blog I will share some of these prayers with you, hopefully to prompt your own leadership prayers.<\/p>\n<p>This first, very familiar prayer, is one I\u2019ve turned to when I have felt woefully ill-equipped for the leadership task before me.<\/p>\n<p>These words, uttered by Solomon in 1<sup>st<\/sup> Kings 3: 7-9, have been repeated by leaders through the centuries.<\/p>\n<p>Here is my personalized version:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Here I am:<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>God<\/strong><strong>, my God, you have made me, your servant, leader of this church. I\u2019m too young for this, a mere child! I don\u2019t know the ropes, hardly know the \u2018ins\u2019 and \u2018outs\u2019 of this job. And here I am, set down in the middle of your people.<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Here\u2019s what I want: Give me a God-listening heart so I can lead your people well. For who on their own is capable of leading your people?<\/strong><strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>For leaders, praying the scriptures not only can put words to your deepest thoughts, but it also ensures, as John Maxwell teaches, that you are always praying in God\u2019s will.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019ve been a little out of practice in this ancient tradition, consider re-incorporating it into your leadership prayer life.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes it\u2019s the best way to pray, when you don\u2019t know what else to pray.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What other scriptures have you used in your leadership prayers?<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The looming decision.
