He was professional. He was educated. He was personable.<\/p>\n<p>But something on his resume concerned me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTell me about your leadership experience,\u201d I said to him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWell,\u201d he began with a sense of confidence. \u201cI have 15 years of leadership experience.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I looked back at his resume.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not so sure about that,\u201d I stated slowly. \u201cYou\u2019ve worked in 5 different churches so far, correct?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>I looked up from the resume and said, \u201cWell, it seems to me you don\u2019t really have 15 years experience. It seems that you have what others have called &#8216; three years experience, repeated five times&#8217;.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This leader was so talented, it was no wonder that every few years he would receive job offers from other ministries. But the fact that he seemingly accepted these offers\u00a0<em>each time<\/em>\u00a0meant that he was missing out on a critical component of a leader\u2019s development.<\/p>\n<p><strong>He was missing out on longevity.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>You see, there are certain elements in a leader\u2019s development that only accrue when one has remained in the same organization for six, seven, eight years or more.<\/p>\n<p>When you stick it out in your leadership role over a long period of time, you benefit by developing:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Fortitude<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Leadership can knock you around a bit. Staying in the same leadership role for the long haul can \u201ctoughen you up\u201d as you survive the hard times.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Deep loyalty<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Anyone who has remained in a leadership role over many years has learned to develop fierce loyalty to those they lead, and those they lead up to.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Time-tested momentum<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>There\u2019s just something that happens several years into a leader\u2019s time that produces exponential results. And you only realize these results when you stay in your role over time.<\/p>\n<p>My point is not that you should never look for greener pastures.
