Before taking off, a pilot will go through an extensive checklist to ensure that the plane is fully prepared and equipped for the journey ahead. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Only when the pilot is satisfied that this meticulous safety list has been checked off will they allow the plane to be pushed back from the gate.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In the same way effective leaders would do well to start each day running down a thorough checklist to ensure their leadership will be maximized that day.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottcochrane.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/4256039581_969b764c03_b.jpg\" class=\"btn-image--openpopup figure aligncenter size-full wp-image-4184\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4184\" title=\"P1050519\" src=\"http:\/\/www.scottcochrane.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/4256039581_969b764c03_b.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"473\" height=\"266\" srcset=\"https:\/\/scottcochrane.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/4256039581_969b764c03_b.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/scottcochrane.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/4256039581_969b764c03_b-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/scottcochrane.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/4256039581_969b764c03_b-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/scottcochrane.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/4256039581_969b764c03_b-433x244.jpg 433w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 473px) 100vw, 473px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>What should be on that checklist?<\/p>\n<p>That depends on what kind of leader you aspire to be.<\/p>\n<p>For me, these are the kinds of items that appear on my leadership checklist.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Today I will do everything possible to be a leader who is:<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u221a<\/span> Kind <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>I want my leadership to be \u201cothers-focused\u201d<strong><\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>\u221a\u00a0<\/strong><\/span> Decisive <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>I want today\u2019s decisions to be unwavering<strong><\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>\u221a<\/strong><\/span> Accessible <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>I want my team to know I am available<strong><\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>\u221a<\/strong><\/span> Clear <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>I want to give my team the gift of absolute clarity<strong><\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>\u221a<\/strong><\/span> Persistent <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>I want to pursue our goals with gusto<strong><\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>\u221a<\/strong><\/span> Generous <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>I want to willingly and openly share my time, ideas and resources<strong><\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>\u221a<\/strong><\/span> Optimistic <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>I want my team to feed off my hoped-filled outlook<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>\u221a<\/strong><\/span> Inclusive <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>I want to build a culture that draws others in<strong><\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>\u221a<\/strong><\/span> Patient <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>I want to diligently develop rising leaders over the long-haul<strong><\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>\u221a<\/strong><\/span> Honest <\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>I want to be transparent and authentic<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The point is, no one ever drifted into being a leader of character. No one ever accidentally discovered that they were becoming clearer, more authentic or more decisive.<\/p>\n<p>To move towards these qualities starts with a daily commitment to increasingly incorporate these qualities into your leadership.<\/p>\n<p>So try developing your \u201cpre-flight checklist\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>It could be one tool to help your leadership really take off.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What\u2019s on your leadership pre-flight checklist?<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When you started your day today, did you go through your leadership checklist?
