Every time you need to make a leadership decision there\u2019s a little voice whispering in your ear.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/strong>So, who\u2019s been whispering in your ear?<\/strong><\/p>\n

And just as importantly, do you know what it’s saying?<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

This whispering voice has tremendous influence over whether you hire this person or that person. It informs whether you drive for growth or lean towards quality control.<\/p>\n

The little voice I\u2019m talking about? It\u2019s your hidden values.<\/p>\n

Your hidden values are different than the corporate values you espouse, like \u201cExcellence\u201d, \u201cIntegrity\u201d and \u201cInnovation\u201d. Hidden values lie much deeper.<\/p>\n

Hidden values are found in the hot-wiring of \u201cwho you are\u201d; they are the basic make-up of your character, and ultimately they drive the dozens of leadership decisions you make every day- \u00a0whether you\u2019ll hire, or fire\u2026whether you\u2019ll act or wait\u2026whether you\u2019ll buy or sell.<\/p>\n

Let me give you an example.<\/p>\n

A while ago I was admiring a beautiful red Ferrari, and the friend I was standing with said, \u201cWouldn\u2019t you love to own that?\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWho wouldn\u2019t?\u201d I answered. \u201cBut I could never afford it.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSure you could,\u201d my friend replied. \u201cYou could buy that car today. Just sell your house. You\u2019d have plenty of money to buy that car.\u201d<\/p>\n

Then he explained the power of hidden values. \u201cThe reason you don\u2019t buy that car is not because of lack of money. It\u2019s because deep inside you cling to a different value; security and well-being for your family.\u201d<\/p>\n

The point is that effective leadership requires understanding these hidden values, what they\u2019re whispering in your ear. Because when you are aware of these hidden values you can recognize whether they are helping, or hurting, your decisions.<\/p>\n
