These are leaders who understand that, for leadership to be effective, it must be applied at the very heart of an issue, not out on the edge.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>As I wrote in this earlier post, this means leaders must learn how to move away from the periphery, and move straight towards the core.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>So, how do you move from the periphery to the core? Here\u2019s a good starting place\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.scottcochrane.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/arrows-pointing-to-centre.jpg\" class=\"btn-image--openpopup figure aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4881\" ><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-4881\" title=\"arrows-pointing-to-centre\" src=\"http:\/\/www.scottcochrane.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/10\/arrows-pointing-to-centre-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Recognize the signs of peripheral leadership<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Leadership on the periphery involves such low-stakes activities as,<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Writing reports<\/li>\n<li>Organizing and re-organizing<\/li>\n<li>Exchanging pleasantries<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Each of these duties has their place in the life of a leader. But don\u2019t be fooled into thinking that impactful results can be produced here. Effective leaders will move in and out of the periphery as quickly as possible.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Resist the seduction of peripheral leadership<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s the reality.<\/p>\n<p>Peripheral leadership feels good. It can occupy a leader\u2019s time in a way that feels productive and at the same time non-threatening.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes after a season of leadership \u2018heavy lifting\u2019 such dynamics can feel exceedingly attractive, causing someone to linger a bit too long.<\/p>\n<p>But having recognized the tell-tale signs that you might be stuck in the quagmire of peripheral matters, resist the lure to remain any longer than necessary.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Plunge headlong into the high-stakes world of core leadership issues<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re finding the conversations are leading towards decisive action, you\u2019re moving towards the core.<\/p>\n<p>If the decisions carry a bit more risk, you\u2019re moving towards the core.<\/p>\n<p>If the outcomes align with your goals, you\u2019re moving towards the core.<\/p>\n<p>Keep moving in that direction.<\/p>\n<p>Some time spent in the periphery is inevitable.<\/p>\n<p>But as quickly as possible start heading back towards the core.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s where the impact happens.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How do you keep away from peripheral leadership?<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Updated from May 25, 2015 post My leadership trip in Mexico continued this week with a day spent with some of our Global Leadership Summit partners from this region.
