Passion is vital to effective leadership. But is it enough?<\/strong><\/p>\n

That question has stayed with me throughout this week, as the Willow Creek Association has presented, “Partnering to Prevail”, our annual training event for international church leaders.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The 160 leaders from South America, Africa and Europe each personify passionate leadership. But beyond passion, I have also seen a second trait that gives passion its potency for leaders.<\/strong><\/p>\n

And as I reflected in this earlier post, it\u2019s a combination leaders must strive to master.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

For long-lasting impact to occur, a heavy dose of discipline must come along right after passion.<\/p>\n

Discipline is the ability to systematically and methodically push through obstacles. It\u2019s what enables a leader to channel all of that passion into a sustainable plan that delivers results.<\/p>\n

Together, passion and discipline create a formidable leadership combination.<\/p>\n

Here are 10 realities leaders know about the one-two punch of passion and discipline:<\/p>\n

1.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Passion sees the vision. Discipline translates it into action.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/strong>2.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Passion attracts a team. Discipline builds the team<\/strong><\/p>\n

3.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Passion makes good decisions. Discipline implements the decisions.<\/strong><\/p>\n

4.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Passion establishes values. Discipline lives the values out.<\/strong><\/p>\n

5.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Passion envisions a healthy culture. Discipline makes it happen.<\/strong><\/p>\n

6.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Passion describes the goal. Discipline forms the strategy to reach the goal.<\/strong><\/p>\n

7.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Passion creates priorities. Discipline executes the priorities.<\/strong><\/p>\n

8.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Passion generates ideas. Discipline turns them into reality.<\/strong><\/p>\n

9.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0Passion challenges people to grow. Discipline helps them do it.<\/strong><\/p>\n

10.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>Passion drives innovation. Discipline drives implementation.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The point, of course, is not that one is more important than the other.<\/p>\n

Rather, passion and discipline are dependent on each other.<\/p>\n

But the reality is, passion gets more press. Passion is flashier. But without the discipline to translate all that passion into action, you\u2019re left with nothing more than hype.<\/p>\n

So by all means, be sure your leadership contains plenty of passion.<\/p>\n

Just be sure it\u2019s followed up by a heavy dose of discipline.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s the one-two punch you\u2019ll need for long-lasting, high-impact results.<\/p>\n
