{"id":5740,"date":"2017-03-27T20:08:52","date_gmt":"2017-03-28T01:08:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.scottcochrane.com\/?p=5740"},"modified":"2017-03-27T20:08:52","modified_gmt":"2017-03-28T01:08:52","slug":"8-momentum-killers-leaders-must-avoid","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/scottcochrane.com\/index.php\/2017\/03\/27\/8-momentum-killers-leaders-must-avoid\/","title":{"rendered":"8 Momentum Killers Leaders Must Avoid"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Leadership is all about generating momentum.<\/p>\n<p>Take a static organization or situation and drop an effective leader into the mix and what do you get?<\/p>\n<p>Momentum.<\/p>\n<p>Where you have momentum, and where you have no momentum, it always points towards leadership.<\/p>\n<p>In other words, where you have an effective leader, one of the almost inevitable results is a growing sense of momentum.<\/p>\n<p>That is, unless that leader begins to practice any of these all-too common momentum killers:<\/p>\n<h2><strong>1. Over-planning<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Planning is necessary. Over-planning will suck the momentum out of your team.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>2. Dragging-out decision making<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>When team needs a decision it\u2019s deadly when no decision can be found. A delayed decision deflates morale.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>3. Not communicating results<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>It\u2019s tragic when the organization actually hits a milestone, and nobody finds out about it. Sharing good news is low-hanging fruit for momentum building.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>4. Celebrating trivial matters<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>If you measure things that don\u2019t matter, pretty soon you\u2019ll be celebrating things that don\u2019t matter. Don\u2019t be side-tracked by irrelevant wins.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>5. Not having short-term wins<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Grand-slams are exciting, but rare. If you\u2019re waiting for the big home-run ball, you could be waiting for a long time. Recognize short-term wins, and celebrate them when they are achieved.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>6. Constantly changing targets<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>If you\u2019ve ever been on a team that couldn\u2019t seem to stick with a goal, you know how frustrating this is. And you know what a momentum killer it is when the target keeps changing.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>7. Re-living past glories<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Momentum is built by looking forward. There is a time and place to honor the past, but if you keep retelling the stories of a by-gone era, your momentum will be stuck in its tracks.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>8. Re-organizing<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>One of the first signs of a stalled organization can be obsessive reorganization. If growth is causing you to shake things up, go for it. But don\u2019t allow yourself to be caught in constant re-orgs.<\/p>\n<p>John Maxwell describes momentum as \u201ca leader\u2019s best friend\u201d. Because, as Maxwell points out, when you have momentum everything gets exaggerated, in a positive way.<\/p>\n<p>So make sure your leadership efforts are indeed creating forward momentum.<\/p>\n<p>And your first step could be to be sure you are avoiding these momentum killers.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Leadership is all about generating momentum.
