If you were to ever stop and look at the great leadership and celebrity scandals that have hit in the past few years, you would notice some remarkable similarities.<\/b><\/p>\n

From the televangelists of the 1980\u2019s getting caught in financial schemes, the politicians getting exposed\u00a0in blatant, outrageous lies, to sex scandals involving athletes, no arena of leadership has been immune to scandal.<\/strong><\/p>\n

What have they had in common?<\/strong><\/p>\n

1. Most\u00a0of these people never\u00a0set out\u00a0to commit some outrageous act of folly,<\/strong><\/h2>\n

2. None of these people thought they would get caught,<\/strong><\/h2>\n

3. All of them had their leadership reputations tarnished\u00a0in the process.<\/strong><\/h2>\n

But perhaps the most insidious nature of all leadership scandals is that the person at the center of it all never seems to think the rules apply to them.<\/p>\n

One of\u00a0the most famous (or infamous) examples came from Tiger Woods\u2019 profound public statement regarding his own folly, when he openly acknowledged that, at the time of the scandal, he felt that he was \u201cbigger than the game.\u201d<\/p>\n

Bigger than the game. How many leaders have we seen come crashing down because they thought they had arrived at the place where they were above the rules?<\/p>\n

The lesson for leaders today is blindingly clear. Leadership over the long-haul requires maintaining a sterling reputation. And the starting place is ensuring that you never, ever, believe that in your leadership role you are somehow \u201cbigger than the game.\u201d<\/p>\n

    Do you ever expect more of your team than you\u2019re willing to commit to yourself?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/li>\n

    Do you ever rationalize\u00a0your own questionable behavior on the grounds that, as leader, you are entitled to special privileges?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/li>\n

    Do you ever excuse minor\u00a0indiscretions using \u201cjust this once\u201d approach?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/li>\n

    Do you ever demand special perks of leadership?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/li>\n
  • \n

    Do you ever marginalize people if you feel they haven\u2019t treated you with proper deference?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    Scandals don\u2019t begin the moment something hits the media. It usually starts much sooner.<\/p>\n
