{"id":6141,"date":"2018-05-31T21:21:08","date_gmt":"2018-06-01T02:21:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.scottcochrane.com\/?p=6141"},"modified":"2018-05-31T21:21:08","modified_gmt":"2018-06-01T02:21:08","slug":"how-to-direct-your-leadership-with-bold-declarations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/scottcochrane.com\/index.php\/2018\/05\/31\/how-to-direct-your-leadership-with-bold-declarations\/","title":{"rendered":"How To Direct Your Leadership With Bold Declarations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Have you ever made a leadership declaration?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>When I was in my early 20\u2019s and just embarking on my leadership journey, I made several\u00a0such \u201cdeclarations\u201d, as I called them.\u00a0I was beginning to establish my own approach to leadership\u00a0and I thought it would be helpful if I were to articulate these approaches in the form of a series of definitive statements.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>More than 30 years later I can still recite these declarations. More importantly, they have continued to serve as something of a directional \u201cguiding light\u201d to my approach to leadership.<\/strong><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Leadership Declaration #1:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><strong>I will take responsibility for my own development as a leader<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>I have had the privilege of having many wise and generous leaders pour into my life. But while I have gratefully received this mentoring, I have always held to the belief that I am personally responsible for my own development.<\/p>\n<p>As I have said many times since,\u00a0\u201cLearn from as many leaders as possible. But at the end of the day, no one else is responsible for your own growth. That\u2019s your job.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Leadership Declaration #2:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><strong>I will squeeze every ounce of productivity out of every day<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Right from the start I purposed to master the use of time. Some would later call this \u201cenergy management\u201d, versus \u201ctime management\u201d, but whatever the term, the principle has remained the same; I wanted to extract as much production out of every single minute of every single day as possible.<\/p>\n<p>My mantra has been clear on this; as a leader you must\u00a0maximize your time.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Leadership Declaration #3:<\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><strong>When it comes to sheer effort, I will push myself to the limits.<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In my younger, less mature days I put it this way; \u201cI will work harder than anybody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Later, with a bit more seasoning, I learned to compete with myself, not with those around me. I have now learned to say, \u201cI will continually strive to exert maximum effort in all I do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I have often said,\u00a0\u201cThere will be many reasons some plans don\u2019t work out. Don\u2019t let lack of sustained effort be one of them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Well, these are the declarations I made early on that had the greatest impact in my own leadership.<\/p>\n<p>These might not be yours, but let me urge you to take the time to clarify your own leadership declarations.<\/p>\n<p>They could well become your own leadership guiding light too.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Have you ever made a leadership declaration?
