But authentic leadership isn&#8217;t about what you show on the outside; it&#8217;s about who you are on the inside.<\/h2>\n<p>Comedian Jerry Seinfeld has a hilarious routine about being given a Superman costume for a Halloween present.<\/p>\n<p>Reading the box, he was surprised to read the disclaimer, \u201cDo not attempt to fly!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love the idea of the kid who\u2019s stupid enough to think he really is Superman,\u201d Seinfeld muses, \u201cbut smart enough to check that box before he goes off the roof.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Imagine.<\/p>\n<p>Thinking that by merely putting on the right costume it could somehow magically transform you.<\/p>\n<p>And yet some people think that\u2019s how leadership works.<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019ve seen the costume and believe that if they simply put it on then they too will be magically transformed into a leader.<\/p>\n<p>In honor of Halloween, here are 5 common costumes leaders can be tempted to wear&#8230;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>1.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Bossy-ness<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Simply barking out orders doesn\u2019t make you a leader.<\/p>\n<p>Usually it just makes a person a bit obnoxious.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>2.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Busy-ness<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Some people actually believe that by darting frantically from one disjointed activity to another, it must mean they are a great leader.<\/p>\n<p>Often it means only that the person is either unfocused or a poor time manager.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>3.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Distracted-ness<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>This costume is worn by the person who keeps their smart phone on ready alert, even when they\u2019re in a conversation with you. At the slightest vibration their attention is immediately diverted away from you and onto their device.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s no indication of leadership. Really, it\u2019s just poor manners.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>4.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Crankiness<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Some people actually believe that simply by taking on a frustrated disposition it indicates that they must be carrying huge leadership responsibilities.<\/p>\n<p>Actually, it just\u00a0creates a toxic culture for the team.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><strong>5.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><strong>Talky-ness<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>While it\u2019s true that effective leaders are good communicators, some people get this one all wrong. They believe that they can be a leader simply by being able to talk\u2026and talk\u2026and talk\u2026and talk\u2026and talk\u2026<\/p>\n<p>But anyone can talk. Leaders, on the other hand,\u00a0communicate. Huge difference.<\/p>\n<p>So, what does an authentic leader wear in place of these costumes?
