{"id":6786,"date":"2020-03-07T01:38:43","date_gmt":"2020-03-07T07:38:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.scottcochrane.com\/?p=6786"},"modified":"2020-03-07T01:38:43","modified_gmt":"2020-03-07T07:38:43","slug":"3-ways-to-restore-sanity-to-the-excellence-value-6","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/scottcochrane.com\/index.php\/2020\/03\/07\/3-ways-to-restore-sanity-to-the-excellence-value-6\/","title":{"rendered":"3 Ways to Restore Sanity to the Excellence Value"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Why is it that, for some organizations, aspiring for \u201cexcellence\u201d leads to an inspiring environment of achievement, while for others it seems to lead to a neurotic atmosphere of fear?<\/h2>\n<p><strong>I once was talking with a new team member as part of his on-boarding process, when I mentioned to him that \u201cexcellence\u201d was one of our core values.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cOh no,\u201d he moaned. \u201cNot again\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>I pressed him to explain his response.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cI just came from a team that espoused the \u2018excellence value\u2019,\u201d he lamented, \u201cand the culture there was so stressful; but everyone accepted it as part of the excellence value.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The fact is, many organizations espouse this sentiment, always with the most noble of purposes. For some, this leads to a culture of empowerment, and for others it leads to a neurotic perfectionism.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The difference can be found in a healthy understanding of what the excellence value really is, and what it means.\u00a0<\/strong><strong>If you want to move towards a healthy view of excellence, \u00a0there\u00a0are three important distinctions that must be understood.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div>\n<h2><strong>1.\u00a0\u00a0 Understand the distinction between\u00a0<em>showmanship\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>excellence.<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Showmanship\u00a0is an often misguided attempt to mimic the sheen and polish of another organization. Showmanship is shallow and inauthentic.<\/p>\n<p>Whereas the heart of excellence is\u00a0reflected in a passionate desire to simply not settle for anything less than our best.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>2.\u00a0\u00a0 Understand the distinction between\u00a0<em>individual excellence<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>corporate excellence<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Individual excellence means \u201cdo your best\u201d. Corporate excellence means \u201cdo OUR best\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Just because Joe did HIS best painting the front steps of the office building, if he\u2019s just not a good painter and the job looks terrible, it reflects on the entire organization. Corporate excellence looks beyond the individual. It asks, \u201cHave WE done OUR best?\u201d<\/p>\n<h2><strong>3.\u00a0\u00a0 Understand the distinction between\u00a0<em>perfection<\/em>\u00a0and\u00a0<em>excellence<\/em><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Perfection, almost by definition, is either unattainable or unsustainable. It can lead to an almost neurotic pursuit of error-free performance that can suck the joy out of your organization.<\/p>\n<p>Excellence, on the other hand, creates an inspiring environment which sees teams spurring one another on.<\/p>\n<p>If the excellence value has been causing your organization undue angst, don\u2019t discard the value.
