You must be able to complete things. And, more often than you\u2019d think, sometimes you have to put an end to things.<\/span><\/h2>\n<h2><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">To take your leadership to the next level, you may need the courage to kill off a good idea.<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><strong>But how can you tell if it\u2019s time to kill off that idea?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Here are 3 indicators it might be time\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><strong>1. When the initiative has more nostalgia than results<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Take a look around. Are there any strategies that continue to limp along because of a warm memory attached to them? Was the initiative launched by someone you all have good feelings towards? Does the initiative belong to an era that brings up pleasant recollections of a better time?<\/p>\n<p>Many projects and initiatives continue to limp along long after they ceased producing any meaningful results. Whether it\u2019s out of nostalgia, or loyalty to the members on a team, leaders will sometimes shrink back from declaring a non-producing project as \u201cdead\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s an old proverb that says, \u201cIf you find yourself riding a dead horse, your best strategy is to dismount.\u201d But very often leaders will instead attempt to revive the dead horse. They\u2019ll try placing a different rider on the dead horse, or they\u2019ll get the team brainstorming ways to speed up the pace of the dead horse.<\/p>\n<p>But leaders need to know when it\u2019s time to dismount, regardless of the warm memories it represents.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>2. When the initiative\u00a0has lost its purpose<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Sometimes an initiative will continue to produce results, but after a season or two it is simply no longer considered to be at the center of the overall mission of the team.<\/p>\n<p>When I served as executive pastor of a large church in Canada, one of the ministry evaluation questions I would ask is, \u201cIf we were starting this church today, would we launch it with this particular ministry?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Things change. Seasons change. And sometimes those changes mean that a once strategic project is no longer mission central.<\/p>\n<p>And it\u2019s time to let it go.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>3. When the initiative\u00a0has lost its \u201cbuzz\u201d<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Sometimes you\u2019ll notice that the \u201cbuzz\u201d is just no longer there. You\u2019ll discern that there is no energy surrounding the project.<\/p>\n<p>Everything either generates energy or drains energy.<\/p>\n<p>And if you have a project that is an energy drainer, it could be time to put it out of its misery.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s never fun to end a project that once was full of momentum.<\/p>\n<p>But pay attention to these clues that the \u201cbest before\u201d date has come and gone.<\/p>\n<p>And be prepared to let that initiative ride gracefully off into the sunset.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As a leader, you must be able to start things.
