The quote, properly understood, is intended to underscore the value of humble, team-first leadership. But misunderstood, it can deprive you of a vital piece of leadership information.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Some people believe that \u201cit doesn\u2019t matter who gets the credit\u201d means that you should not pay attention to, or even be made aware of, those who are really delivering outstanding performance. \u201cAfter all,\u201d it can be thought, \u201cIt doesn\u2019t matter who gets the credit on our team\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you have interpreted \u201cit doesn\u2019t matter who gets the credit\u201d to mean that individual recognition is not a good thing, step back and ask yourself these questions:<\/p>\n<h2>Do I know who is generating our best ideas?<\/h2>\n<h2>Do I know who is launching our most successful initiatives?<\/h2>\n<h2>Do I know who is producing the most results?<\/h2>\n<h2>Do I know who is the most encouraging person on our team?<\/h2>\n<h2>Do I know who is going out of their way to support their teammates\u2019 projects?<\/h2>\n<p>If you do, give them the credit.<\/p>\n<p>Otherwise, if you continue to misapply the \u201cit doesn\u2019t matter who gets the credit\u201d sentiment, you will face an enormous leadership shortcoming; you will be unable to identify your key contributors.<\/p>\n<p>So, no matter how noble the statement sounds, don\u2019t misunderstand or misapply the notion that \u201cit doesn\u2019t matter who gets the credit\u201d.
