{"id":844,"date":"2011-02-04T06:00:25","date_gmt":"2011-02-04T06:00:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.scottcochrane.com\/?p=844"},"modified":"2011-03-22T03:27:22","modified_gmt":"2011-03-22T03:27:22","slug":"how_leaders_know_when_to_be_still","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/scottcochrane.com\/index.php\/2011\/02\/04\/how_leaders_know_when_to_be_still\/","title":{"rendered":"How Leaders Know When to &quot;Be Still&quot;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Last night I was reminded of a powerful leadership truth as I read the story of one of the great leaders in the bible.<\/p>\n<p>The timing of this reminder couldn\u2019t have been better.<\/p>\n<p>I was reading the account in Exodus where the Israelites were trapped at the Red Sea, with the armies of Pharaoh thundering toward them. In the midst of the people\u2019s panic, Moses stood before them and delivered this timeless leadership truth:<\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-845\" src=\"http:\/\/www.scottcochrane.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/scott_amy.jpg\" alt=\"scott and amy\" width=\"300\" height=\"209\" \/>\u201cThe LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still.\u201d (Ex 14:14)<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Every Kingdom-building leader knows this to be true, at some level. The key is knowing when to embrace it.<\/p>\n<p>That moment arrived for me earlier in the day as I spoke with my daughter Amy via Skype.<\/p>\n<p>Amy is spending a year with Youth With a Mission (YWAM) in Townsville, Australia, which was directly in the path of Cyclone Yasi. This category 5 storm was packing winds of 300 kilometres per hour, described by Queensland\u2019s Premier Anna Bligh as bringing \u00a0\u201c\u2026scenes of devastation and heartbreak on an unprecedented scale. This cyclone is like nothing else we&#8217;ve dealt with before as a nation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As a father there was nothing more I wanted to do than to somehow ensure my daughter\u2019s safety. But there was nothing I could do, other than to commit her to God\u2019s care.<\/p>\n<p>I needed to embrace this leadership truth. \u201cThe LORD will fight for you; you need only to be still.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>I\u2019ve learned there are three indicators that it\u2019s time to let the Lord do the fighting:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>When the situation seems hopeless.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>When your resources seem useless.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>When your leadership seems powerless.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Allowing God to fight for you while you, as a leader, are \u201cstill\u201d before him is not the same as giving up, throwing in the towel, or passively succumbing to overwhelming circumstances.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, being still before God is an active leadership stance, and can be your most potent strategic weapon.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How do you know when it\u2019s time to \u201cbe still\u201d?<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last night I was reminded of a powerful leadership truth as I read the story of one of the great leaders in the bible.
